Feature Friday with Lili Nis Mommygraphy!

The winner of last week's 'the space in my heart' challenge is the talented Lili Nis, of Lili Nis Mommygraphy.  Read on to find out all about her, and see more of her gorgeous work!

1. Please tell us about yourself...

My Name is Lili Nis , mother of 3 little kids, ages 7, 5 and 20 Months. I come from indonesia , but live with my family in Bremen, Germany.

2. Can you describe your style in 3 words? Why those words?

My style in three words, it has to be emotive, vibrant and dreamy.
Emotive, because i hope that I can convey emotion to the people who look at my image. It's important to me that they feel something  when they look at my image.
Vibrant , for so many reasons i.e. I love color, vibrant color, sometimes if I have a hard day (which often happens because I have three little kids ;) ) I feel better if i see something vibrant, it makes me smile again.
Dreamy, well somewhere in my heart I'm still a little girl who loves those dreamy, fairy things;)

3. What sparked your passion for photography?

Early 2008 my husband bought me a DSLR , but I always used it in automatic mode and I had no interrest in learning more, until 2012. A friend of mine pushed me to attend a workshop " how to shoot in manual mode" and since then, I have been really in love with photography. Every night when my Baby is asleep and I'm waiting for my husband to come home from work, I sit in front of my laptop and jump from one photography comunity to another.

4. What's in your camera bag right now?

Canon 5Dmkii, Sigma 35mm1.4 (which is almost all the time on it), Lensbaby edge80, Canon 85mm1.8, Canon 50mm1.4 and Lensbaby spark.

5. What is your dream shoot or project?

Couple in Boudoir style , that would be something out of my comfort zone.

6. What are some of the misconceptions you had about photography and photographers at the beginning of your photography journey? Have they changed, and how?

I always thought that a good image has to fulfill all the photography rules to be perfect, which can give you a hard time trying. But thanks to other photographers (i.e. Anita Cline from "my three sons image") I learned that if I make an image that is beautiful for me but maybe technically not perfect, it's still totally sufficient. Of course we have to know the rules so that we can break them, but I can say now that I just shoot for me, I don't expect that the others will like it, but I am happy if they do.

7. What advice would you give to newbie photographers? What advice do you wish you'd been given at the very beginning?

Take it easy, don't push yourself so hard and don't compare yourself with other photographers who have already been in business for a long time :) and I wish that somebody would have told me that. You have to know the photography rules but you shouldnt shoot just basicly according to the rules.

This Week's Judge: Meredith Rockefeller!

This week we welcome Meredith of Meredith Rockefeller Photography, and she's looking for mischief! While you're capturing those mischievous moments, learn about her journey and take a look at some of her beautiful work!

1. Tell us about yourself:

I'm a former high school English teacher, turned stay-at-home mom to one daughter (10), and two boys (8--yup, they're twins).  We live in Northern Virginia.  We don't have any pets yet, but my husband and I promised the kids we'd get a dog in a year or two, and they've already picked "Donut" for the name.

2. What ignited your passion for photography, and what fuels it now?

Even in high school, I was the girl with the camera, but it took me a few point-and-shoots, and a film SLR before realizing I needed to learn how to shoot in manual to get the results I was envisioning. My kids, and documenting our lives, are still my main focus, but as they get older and are often out of the house, I find myself wanting to learn new techniques or styles that I otherwise wouldn't have considered.  I do spent a lot of time doing sports photography for their activities; I wouldn't necessarily have pursued that on my own, but I am really enjoying it!

3. What's in your camera bag right now, what do use the most? the least?

I shoot with a Nikon D610 and the 70-200mm f2.8, 50mm f1.4, 16-35mm f4, 35mm f2, and 28-80mm G.  The 70-200 is my favorite lens, but I have really been enjoying the wider angle of the 16-35 recently.  It's fun to be able to include an entire room in a shot, and I love how small it makes my kids appear in outdoor shots.

4. What's your dream project or shoot?

I love the mountains, so I would love to shoot in Bavaria, or the Scottish Highlands, or have everyday access to a Lake Tahoe type backdrop.  Ideally, there would be perfect light, too!

5. What is the biggest challenge you face as a photographer?

I definitely struggle with the comparison game.  It's such an easy trap to fall into, and social media is such a double-edged sword where artistry and self-doubt are concerned.

6.  If you had $500 to spend on photography...

How should you spend it?
I should invest in a good tripod and remote; getting in the frame with the family would be a lot easier!

How do you wish you could spend it?
Hmm, I think I would spent it on a Lensbaby.  I the love effect, but always hesitate to invest because I'm not sure clients will appreciate the results.

How would you really spend it?
I have a bit of a bag addiction, so while I hate to admit that I would spent it on how I carry my gear rather than the gear itself, I would probably get the ONA Capri.  It's definitely on my list of photography-related items I'd love to have!

7. Is there any one thing you wish someone had told you at the very beginning of your photography journey?
Hmm, that it is, in fact, a journey with a lot of room for growth and development.  Success, however you define it, doesn't happen in a linear fashion.

Feature Friday with Cindy Cavanagh!

Cindy Cavanagh, the talent behind Cindy Cavanagh: Photographer, Storyteller, Artist, is sharing a look at her gear, her dream shoot, and her style.  Cindy is the winner of last week's 'swirls of color' challenge.

1. Please tell us about yourself...
My name is Cindy Cavanagh. I am a photographer who loves to capture lifestyle, still life, styled portraits and whatever beauty captures my attention. I live In Sydney, Australia with my husband and 5 children. My family keeps me busy on an ordinary day.

2. Can you describe your style in 3 words? Why those words?Home, Heart and Beauty.
Home: As a stay at home Mum,  home is very important to me. The moments we share on a day to day basis are what inspires me. The word "Home" also means my neighbourhood, my city, my country. My day to day landscape is so ordinary but when I open my eyes, I see that it is extraordinary.
Heart: This word encompasses all of the emotion that I feel about photography and being an artist. It includes the emotion, connection, storytelling of my art. These emotions are what I strive to portray in every image.
Beauty: I value the beauty of the everyday. A tree filled with spring flowers will attract my attention as I go about my day. I will look and admire each day until I decide to stop and capture it's beauty. Light, colour, movement are important to me.

3. What sparked your passion for photography?
I have always loved photos. I loved looking through my Mum's photo albums as a child. However, it wasn't until we moved to Brazil that the passion was ignited. Living in a foreign country, I wanted to document are adventures. I had a point and shoot camera and I captured the post card moments. I started to feel a frustration about the images and wanting to learn more. Once I picked up my first DLSR, I was hooked.

4. What's in your camera bag right now? I have a Nikon D800, a 24mm Sigma Art, 50mm and a 105mm.

5. What is your dream shoot or project? Celebrating the beauty of motherhood is a  project that I have been working on for the last 18months.We often get weighed down by the busyness of motherhood and feel overwhelmed. Yet, we keep moving forward because of our love. I adore capturing a Mother's love. It is so beautiful. More importantly, I love for Mother's to see the love they feel for their family.

6. What are some of the misconceptions you had about photography and photographers at the beginning of your photography journey? Have they changed, and how? I don't think I had any misconceptions. However, I had no idea how much time I would spend at the computer. With editing, blogging, marketing, and social media, a big portion of my time is spent on the computer. I try to minimize this as much as possible but it is part of the process.

7. What advice would you give to newbie photographers? What advice do you wish you'd been given at the very beginning? To follow your creative heart and to nurture it. We are creative souls and often our creativity gets lost in the wash as we go about our day to day. We need to make time to slowdown and be creative. To be inspired every day and nurture our list of inspirations. If we don't, we feel lost and our art flounders. Well mine does, and I have made it my goal this year to slowdown.

{swirls of color}

Thank you so much for inviting me into Snap Maven for the week. I have loved watching everyone’s interpretation of the theme coming in all week. I really wish I could have chosen them all, but I couldn’t, so here are my top picks for the week:

This is such a perfect unscripted moment of childhood abandon (and kudos to Mom for the huge painting space to create such a masterpiece)

.............................

Okay, so I want this chandelier too.

.............................

I adore this, and not just because I am sitting in a colourless arctic zone right now. The freedom of it makes me breathe easy.

.............................

I have tried and tried and tried for a shot like this every year at the local fair and
have yet to be able to get that golden hue.

.............................

I love how unexpected this is. I really have no idea where it is. Maybe a subway, or a shopping mall. That unknown is what draws me to this.

.............................

The most perfect Mommy moment ever. Beautiful chaos. I want to do this with my kids.

.............................

I love the swirling colours combined with the moving shapes. A perfect combination.

.............................

Movement. It’s all about the movement and the colour together.

.............................

Once again, it’s that movement. The falling confetti mixed with the
intent focus on his eyes is such a perfect juxtaposition.

.............................

Even without the spectacular detail on that bubble, I love this. But that bubble is spectacular. Totally unexpected. But awesome.

.............................

and the winner is.....

Oh my goodness, when I saw this one for the first time, my heart stopped. This is the definition of swirl of colour. Love love love it.

Thank you to everyone who submitted. It was a bit of a learning experience for me to really think about and articulate what it was about each image that I was drawn to. For those who weren’t chosen, please don’t be discouraged. Keep shooting, and keep submitting. One day it will be your turn.
